In response to a tweet from Donald Trump in July telling Massachusetts Senator and likely 2020 presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren that he would give $1 Million to the charity of her choice if she took a DNA test proving her Native American ancestry, (The) Senator Warren has released such a test. This of course comes as the result of Warren repeatedly claiming such an ancestry for a number of years.

The results can be found here. They do indeed prove some degree of Native American ancestry, though at best 1/32, and more likely 1/1024. That would make her closest possible ancestor her great-great-great-great-great-great grandparent, if not her great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandparent.

Regardless, Trump did offer $1 million with no more a parameter than ‘Native American ancestry’, regardless of how much there is. Is it shitty that Warren is making such a huge deal out of all of this? Probably. But there’s also the argument that she didn’t really start it. Then again, there’s the argument that she did. Is it possible that she’s telling the truth when she says that her dad’s parents didn’t want him marrying her mom because her mom had some sort of Native American blood in her? Sure. About as possible as the possibility that she’s lying. There’s just no way to know.

Either way, why we’re testing for genetic ancestry as a part of our political process seems to me pretty anti-American (if we’re defining America’s constitution as instilling ideas as the arbiters of people, and not the other way around). Does it really matter what Elizabeth Warren’s ancestry is?

Apparently to some people.
