The man many have called the ‘Trump of the Tropics’, Jair Bolsanero, has secured his place on the Brazilian presidential ballot to run against Worker’s Party candidate Fernando Haddad on 10/28. Bolsanero has been called racist, homophobic, and more for quite some time, at least some of it justifiably.
The election comes on the heels of one of the biggest corruption scandals in the history of the country, and which included the indictment of Brazil’s beloved former president ‘Luca’, as he’s known in the country, although Luca denies any wrongdoing and writes off the allegations as a mere political hit. In addition, the country has seen a homicide rate of over 6,000 over the past year. One in three citizens have been bystanders in a shootout.
As expected, this is being touted in much of the developed world as yet another point in a growing trend of far-right nationalism, but is it? Bolsanero might be a piece of shit as a person, but if he does what’s needed to help his country?
"The good people of Brazil want to rid themselves of socialism,” Bolsanero has said. “They don't want Venezuela's regime. They want a liberal economy and they want to defend family values."
Venezuela is not doing very good right now. Brazil’s economy has also been in a downward trajectory in the past few years, despite several years of prosperity before that. I personally do agree that the guy sucks, and I’m not sure I would trust him to do what he says he will, or that he won’t gone done some fucked up shit regarding basic human rights, but I also wouldn’t be the only one in the country, and I am not currently able to tell the future (as far as I know).
More details as they develop.
